Kristin is a professional yoga instructor (ERYT-500) specializing in ashtanga yoga, anatomy and physiology, and yoga for beginners/every body. Kristin lives in Chicago, Illinois where she teaches yoga classes, workshops, and private lessons. She primarily has a home practice, getting up in the wee hours of the morning to fit in her postures before going to her “real world” tech job, and she travels periodically to study with her teacher, Sharath Jois, in Mysore, India.

Kristin’s love for movement started early when she began dance training at the age of 4 years old, and eventually, went on to earn a BFA Dance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She began to dabble in yoga a bit in her college years, but did not truly devote herself until she met Debra Risberg, founder of Main Street Yoga, in 2008 who exposed her to Kripalu Yoga. Debra’s teachings on gentle breath coordinated movement and self-compassion were invaluable to Kristin as she went through a few years working through injury and pain. During this time, Kristin’s relationship to her body and herself underwent deep, seismic shifts that formed a foundation that still informs her practice and teaching today.

Kristin took a pilgrimage to the Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health, only 50 miles from her actual place of birth, in 2011 to go through a “rebirth” of sorts. She spent 4 weeks there, and completed her 200 hour yoga teacher certification under the direction of Brahmani Liebman and Jashoda Edmunds.

Kristin also began to practice with Yoganand Michael Carroll, Debra’s teacher and a senior Kripalu Yoga teacher, in 2011, and over the course of 5 years completed his Advanced Studies in Tantra Hatha Yoga course.

After completing her first teacher training in 2011, Kristin moved back to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and began teaching, eventually growing her teaching practice into her full time job. Kristin taught prolifically for Amara Yoga & Arts, leading retreats, intensives, and yoga teacher trainings, and Mettler Center, where she taught classes and private lessons for a primarily senior population. She also founded the only traditional Mysore-style ashtanga yoga program in CU at the time.

Kristin went through a separation and divorce in 2013 that shook up everything. This is when she found the ashtanga yoga method, and instantly fell in love with the feeling of empowerment that it brought. After a short time of dropping into classes a few times a week, she decided to “take it on” as her daily practice and started practicing at home.

After about a year of practice, she began teaching the ashtanga yoga method, but felt a bit like a fraud without ever having had a consistent teacher tied to the lineage. She began driving 2 and half hours from Champaign to Chicago every week or two to practice with Todd Boman, and went on her first trip to Mysore, India in 2016 to practice with Sharath Jois for 2 months. She went back for another 2 month trip in 2017.

Upon returning from her second trip to India in 2018, Kristin made a lifestyle change and moved to Chicago, returning to a corporate gig with a tech company. She describes this past year has been a great opportunity to look inward and build a foundation for the next phase of life. Kristin currently teaches at Yoga Now Chicago, and plans to offer more and more opportunities to study yoga with her as she gets established. Please see the Yoga section in the menu for details about her current offerings.
